Warning about Medications and Surgery

Stop taking COUMADIN (or WARFARIN) 5 to 7 days prior to surgery. This should be discussed with your doctor or your surgeon. If you are taking any ASPIRIN products or anti-inflammatory medications, please stop taking them one week prior to your surgery date. Some examples of these medications are listed below:

  • ALEVE

  • ADVIL

  • ANACIN

  • ANSAID

  • ASPIRIN

  • BAYER

  • BUFFERIN

  • CATAFLAM

  • DAYPRO

  • EMPIRIN with CODEINE

  • EXCEDRIN

  • IBUPROFEN

  • LODINE

  • ARTHROTEC

  • MOTRIN

  • NAPROSYN

  • ORUVAIL

  • PERCODAN

  • VOLTAREN

  • ECOTRIN

  • VICOPROFEN

Carotid endarterectomy patients must check with their neurosurgeon for instructions regarding these medications. Your physician will prescribe an appropriate substitute if you require these medications during the week prior to surgery. Over-the-counter TYLENOL is always an acceptable substitute.
