Possible Side Effects of Steroids

(Return to Table of Contents)

A MEDROL Dose Pack or DECADRON are commonly used for patients with nerve root irritation. Patients having brain surgery often use DECADRON prior to surgery and for a short time thereafter. DECADRON is generally not used on a chronic basis except for particularly malignant brain tumors.

Possible Side Effects of Steroids

DECADRON can cause problems with fluid balance or blood chemistry balance, as well as trouble with muscle weakness and osteoporosis. Peptic ulcer disease with possible perforation and hemorrhage are also possible, and DECADRON does slow wound healing. It can cause headache and psychological disturbances, increased appetite, weight gain, and fluid retention. Patients with diabetes may find their blood sugar more difficult to control while they are taking DECADRON. Prolonged usage may produce a condition called aseptic necrosis in the joints of the body.
